Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive method of treatment to help eliminate unwanted hair from your body. It involves using laser energy that targets your hair follicles with highly concentrated light beams to damage them, ultimately inhibiting hair growth.

The procedure heats the hair follicles to a temperature that either destroys them or causes them to be dormant for an extended period of time. The pigment inside the hair absorbs the laser light and converts it to heat that travels down to the hair follicles.

How long does a laser hair removal session last?

The highly trained and certified providers at Southwest Michigan Dermatology use the noninvasive laser hair removal system to treat large areas, such as the back or legs. This process only takes 20-30 minutes, saving you time compared with typical treatments that can take up to an hour.

How long your procedure lasts depends on the area treated and the amount of hair targeted.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal can produce both temporary and permanent results, depending on whether your hair follicles are completely or partially destroyed during your treatment.

However, even if the procedure only inflicts partial damage to the hair follicle, your results can still last a long time.

What areas can laser hair removal treat?

Popular areas for laser hair removal treatments include:

  • Face
  • Chin
  • Upper lip
  • Underarms
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Arms
  • Legs

Your procedure can be performed on almost any area of the body.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

Laser hair removal does require a series of treatments. Patients lose 10%-25% of the dark hairs each treatment. Due to the way the laser detects the hair, the more contrast between skin tone and the hair color the better it will work.

Although you might need multiple treatments, you can look forward to a pleasant experience.
