Laser Treatments Q & A

What are laser treatments?

Laser treatments rely on beams of light to rejuvenate the skin. Energy-based treatments work by creating micro-injuries in the epidermis, the skin’s surface layer. These microscopic wounds trigger your body’s natural healing response, which releases new collagen to repair the damage. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein and keeps skin plump and tight.

As you age, collagen levels decline, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity. Laser treatments restore depleted levels of collagen to restore the skin’s youthful appearance and quality.

Are there different types of laser treatments?

There are many different types of laser treatments at Southwest Dermatology, including:

Intense pulsed light (IPL)

IPL treatments use multiple wavelengths of light to treat early signs of aging, pigmentary issues, and vascular concerns.

Laser skin resurfacing

The team uses the non-ablative fractional laser to allow the body to use its natural healing process to increase collagen production and regenerate tissue. This smooths out the skin in both texture and pigmentation.

KTP Laser

The KTP laser is ideal for treating the unattractive skin lesions particularly on the face.

AviClear

Southwest Michigan Dermatology also offers AviClear™, an energy-based device that specifically targets active acne outbreaks.
