CoolSculpting Q & A

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical procedure that reduces stubborn areas of fat. Sometimes diet and exercise aren’t enough to shift these fatty regions, but the CoolSculpting fat-freezing process destroys fat cells in the target area for a permanent solution.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting technology uses a process called cryolipolysis to kill fat cells. By directing intense cold into targeted fat cells, your provider uses CoolSculpting to destroy the cells permanently. Once the fat cells are dead, your body breaks them down naturally over the following weeks until no trace remains.

Can fat cells grow back again after the CoolSculpting procedure?

Once they’re dead, the fat cells can’t regenerate. During your efforts to lose weight through dieting and regular exercise, your fat cells reduce in size, but you still have the same overall number. Weight loss shrinks the cells but doesn’t destroy them, whereas CoolSculpting kills the cells and removes them permanently so that they won’t regrow.

Is CoolSculpting safe?

CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared procedure that’s gone through rigorous testing to ensure it’s safe. The treatment area receives a precisely targeted and controlled cooling treatment that only affects the fat cells beneath the skin, so there is no damage to any other tissues.

The CoolSculpting system has built-in safety measures, so, for example, if the sensors detect your skin is getting too cold, they trigger the automatic shutdown procedure.

CoolSculpting is noninvasive, so there are no incisions in your skin and no needle punctures. Consequently, there aren’t the same risks of infection as surgical procedures, and there are no wound healing issues to deal with.

The team of aestheticians at Southwest Michigan Dermatology are fully trained in using CoolSculpting technology and receive ongoing training to maintain consistently high standards.

What areas of the body are suitable for CoolSculpting treatment?

CoolSculpting is suitable for all the parts of your body where people typically have problems with stubborn areas of fat and unsightly bulges, including:

  • Thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Back fat
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Under the chin

CoolSculpting can treat any one of these problem areas or a combination to suit each client, enabling you to sculpt and contour your body to achieve the desired result.

CoolSculpting is not designed to treat obesity or weight problems that could be resolved with a program of dieting and exercise.
