What is Botox/Dysport/Daxxify?

How does Botulinumtoxin or “Tox” work?

Botulinumtoxin or “Tox” is a neuromodulator that interferes with the nerve signals that control muscle movement. Once injected, “Tox” temporarily paralyzes muscle contractions and prevents the skin on top from creasing. This medication can help smooth existing wrinkles and slow the formation of new ones.

What types of wrinkles does “Tox” treat?

Botox and other neuromodulators target dynamic wrinkles. Also called expression lines, dynamic wrinkles form over time from repetitive movements. Common areas of dynamic wrinkles include:

• Forehead lines
• Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows)
• Crow’s feet
• Marionette lines (around the mouth)
• Bunny lines (on the nose)

As a neuromodulator, Botox is also an effective treatment for certain medical conditions, including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and chronic migraine pain.

What can I expect after treatment?

Injecting Botox, Dysport or Daxxify only takes a few minutes, making it the perfect “lunchtime” treatment. 

Your skin may be tender, swollen, and bruised at the injection sites, but these effects fade within days. Most people experience smoother skin within seven days of injection.

How long do the effects last?

Botox and Dysport typically wear off within 3-6 months. Daxxify may last 6 months. As the treatment’s effects subside, you can return to Southwest Michigan Dermatology for maintenance treatments. The dermatologists may also combine your treatment with other cosmetic solutions, such as dermal fillers, to enhance your results.
