Acne Q & A

What causes acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that primarily occurs in adolescents during puberty; however, individuals of all ages can experience acne. This skin condition typically occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, or bacteria. Acne typically forms on your face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders because these areas have the most oil glands.

How is acne treated?

There are a variety of types of acne and just as many causes. Making an appointment with one of our dermatologists will help you to find what kind of acne you have, likely causes, and then most importantly, how to treat it.

When you come for an appointment, your provider will evaluate your acne and potential scarring. Then they will work with you to create a treatment plan tailored just for you. Depending on your age, skin type, the severity of your acne, and preferred treatment method, the team may prescribe topical, oral, or a combination of both medication types.

If you have stubborn acne and have tried everything else, we still can help. We offer 2 advanced treatment options, Accutane® and Aviclear!

Isotretinoin, known by the brand name Accutane®, is a powerful medication that treats acne by shrinking oil glands, decreasing the growth of skin bacteria, and preventing clogging pores. It also has anti-inflammatory effects and reduces oil production.

We now offer the first FDA-cleared laser treatment for Acne, AviClear! This laser treatment has little down time. With only 3 treatments about a month apart you will see lasting effects. See our Aviclear page for more information if this is something you are interested in.

What if I have scarring from acne?

If you have been dealing with acne for a long time, it’s possible you have some scarring from it. This can be frustrating to have, especially on your face. Our Laser and Skin care center offers a variety of options to help: Microdermabrasion, microneedling, and chemical peels, are other therapies that reduce acne scarring and smooth your complexion.
